Do you ever need a little pick-me-up? One of the older gentleman at my church said to me this morning, “Give me one of your good hugs and it will last me a whole week!” I needed that; I was feeling tired this morning. The other day my son told me I looked gorgeous. He’s loose with his compliments, I admit, but at the moment I needed that; I was feeling rather, shall we say “fluffy” that day.
God is gracious to give us spiritual pick-me-ups, brief encouraging moments, to sustain us in our work and remind us that our labor is not in vain. Last week my daughter was sharing with me about a bully-encounter that she and her friend had suffered on the playground. She recounted, “Mom, I knew I had to be careful with my words, so I prayed, ‘God, put a guard over my mouth.’ God just gave me the right words to say to the bully, Mom, and she and her friends just walked away!” I sat in joyous amazement from my daughter’s story, but she had no idea why. She was too young to remember, but I can recall that five years ago when my daughter was about six years old, she and I had memorized together Psalm 141:3: Set a guard over my mouth, Lord; keep watch over the door of my lips. God had been faithful to keep His promise to me! At just the right moment, five years later, the Holy Spirit brought to my daughter’s mind the Scripture she needed to pray in the heat of a very difficult moment of her life. It was like a hug from heaven and God whispering in my ear, “Keep it up, Mom! Keep helping your children hide Bible verses in their heart!”
Be encouraged today, knowing that your labor for the Lord is not in vain. And if you need a spiritual pick-me-up, get alone with God right now and let Him remind you how much He loves you.
