So many things I wish I could do for the nations. I wish I could end persecution of Christians around the world and set the captives free. I wish I could help every refugee family find a stable life in a place they could call home. I wish I could end cruelty. I wish I could find a home for every orphaned, abused, or neglected child. I wish I could provide clean water for every village. I wish I could get the gospel message to every person on the planet.
Some of my wishes are a little closer to home. I wish I could send every young person to college. I wish I could transform every crime-infested neighborhood into a haven of peace. I wish I could end abortion. I wish I could help every parent in this nation to love God, love their children, and bring their children up to know the Lord. I wish I could comfort every widow and widower and ensure that their needs are met.
I wish I could help my friend “Jan” find a fulltime job. I wish I could heal the marriage of my friend “Alice.” I wish I could convince my loved one “Jess” to forgive her family and go back home. I wish I could give “Sal” the courage to go on a mission trip. I wish, I wish, I wish. I wish I could figure out all of the world’s problems, including my own, but I cannot. I’m not smart enough, rich enough, or powerful enough, and with the spiritual root of every one of these problems, I cannot transform people’s lives. Only God can do that.
God’s purposes for today are not to make this world perfect; perfection comes later in a place He is preparing for us called heaven. But God does have a purpose in every circumstance happening on this earth. He comforts His people and meets their needs. He shows mercy to the unjust and also beckons them to come to Him. I can choose to be overwhelmed by the enormity of the problems of this world, or be overwhelmed by the faithfulness of my loving God.
